Citizens Respond Positively to AMC’s Inclusive Budgeting Initiative

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has received an encouraging response from citizens as part of its participatory budget exercise for the year 2026–27, with a total of 2,607 suggestions submitted across various channels. This annual initiative seeks public input before finalizing the civic budget, ensuring that the city’s development plans and welfare services are aligned with the needs and priorities of its residents.

Of the total submissions, 798 suggestions were received via email. Categorically, 1,795 suggestions (68.85%) pertained to mandatory civic services, 788 suggestions (30.23%) were related to non-mandatory services, 16 suggestions (0.61%) addressed income and revenue generation, and 8 suggestions (0.31%) focused on service improvement.

Focus on Core Urban Services

Under obligatory services, the majority of feedback centered on key issues impacting daily city life.

Roads and walkways: 487 suggestions (18%)

Drainage and stormwater systems: 327 (12.54%)

Water supply: 297 (11.39%)

Street lighting and electrical systems: 280 (10.74%)

Health, sanitation, and solid waste management: 110 (4.22%)

Traffic management and housing: 98 each (3.76%)

Citizens also contributed ideas concerning schools, crematoriums, fire safety, bridges, and other essential infrastructure.

Emphasis on Beautification and Amenities

Under non-mandatory services, a significant number of suggestions focused on urban aesthetics and community welfare.

Gardens, parks, and tree plantation: 133 suggestions (5.10%)

ICDS projects: 133 (5.10%)

Public transportation (AMTS–AJL): 80 (3.07%)

Gyms and playgrounds: 75 (2.88%)

Parking, estate management, and other civic amenities: 64 (2.45%)

AMC also received valuable suggestions related to Smart City projects, e-governance, libraries, senior citizen parks, and community halls. Additionally, 16 suggestions were directed at revenue generation, while 8 suggestions aimed at enhancing service delivery and efficiency.

Citizens’ Role in Shaping the City

The data highlights that most citizens prioritized core civic concerns—including roads, sanitation, water supply, and health—while also showing growing interest in areas like beautification, recreation, and digital governance.

AMC officials said that all suggestions would be systematically analyzed to identify feasible measures for inclusion in the 2026–27 civic budget. They emphasized that citizens’ active participation is crucial to building a more efficient, cleaner, and smarter Ahmedabad.

“The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation sincerely appreciates the public’s overwhelming response and constructive ideas. These insights will help refine our urban planning and ensure that the upcoming budget truly reflects the aspirations of our people,” the civic body stated.
