In an era when e-commerce was still a distant idea for millions of Indians outside the metros, two young technologists—Vidit Aatrey from Meerut and Sanjeev Kumar from Jharkhand—saw what others overlooked: a nation ready to embrace digital commerce if only someone cared to build it differently.

A decade later, their creation, Meesho, stands tall not just as a marketplace but as a people’s platform, a gateway that brought small sellers, home entrepreneurs, and first-time online shoppers into India’s booming digital economy.

“We always believed,” says Vidit Aatrey, “that technology should not belong only to the top of the pyramid. India is full of talent and ambition—our job was to give people a platform they could trust and grow with.

From Modest Beginnings to Mighty Possibilities

Growing up in cities where dreams travelled faster than resources, both Vidit and Sanjeev learned early what aspiration meant in India’s smaller towns. Highly educated and deeply curious, they gravitated toward technology and problem-solving.

But their breakthrough came with a simple observation:
While India was buzzing with smartphones, e-commerce had barely touched the real India—the unbranded market, the local resellers, the neighbourhood sellers, and the millions of home-run businesses.

We asked ourselves—why should online shopping be limited to branded goods and big-city consumers?” recalls Sanjeev Kumar. “India’s heart lies in its small sellers and small buyers. We wanted to build for them.

Democratising Online Commerce Before It Became a Trend

With this belief, the two founders carved out a unique model—an online bazaar blended with technology, trust, and deep consumer understanding.

Meesho became a platform where:

  • the smallest seller could reach a national audience
  • homemakers could earn by reselling
  • middle-class buyers could enjoy Everyday Low Prices
  • digital tools like AI and machine learning assisted discovery, reliability, and affordability

We wanted Meesho to feel like a friendly neighbourhood market translated into a mobile app,” Vidit says. “Simple, affordable, and relatable.

A Decade of Relentless Growth and Trust-building

Today, Meesho boasts:

  • 575,465+ active sellers
  • 213 million+ active users
  • powerful AI/ML-driven discovery
  • a robust logistics backbone through Valmo
  • deep penetration into India’s tier-II, III, and IV markets

Meesho has become synonymous with reliability and trust among first-time digital users.

Trust is our biggest currency,” Sanjeev emphasizes. “Most of our users are new to e-commerce. If we fail them once, they may never return—not just to us, but to the online world itself.

The IPO: A Milestone, Not a Destination

As Meesho moves toward its ₹5,421 crore IPO opening on December 3, 2025, it marks a defining moment not only for the company but for the founders’ decade-long mission.

This IPO is not the end of our journey—it is the next beginning,” Vidit reflects. “It represents the belief that millions of Indians have placed in us, and we are committed to creating long-term value for them.

The company continues to expand responsibly, investing heavily in cloud infrastructure, AI teams, and new initiatives, all aligned to build an accessible, affordable digital ecosystem.

Changing Lives, One Seller at a Time

Real success, the founders insist, is measured not in valuation but in transformation.

When a housewife from Surat tells us she now earns her own income through Meesho—it reminds us why we started,” Sanjeev shares. “We are not just enabling transactions; we are enabling dignity, confidence, and progress.

A Decade Later, Meesho Is More Than a Company—It’s a Movement

From two young dreamers in Meerut and Jharkhand to the leaders of one of India’s most influential digital platforms, Vidit Aatrey and Sanjeev Kumar’s journey is proof that:

Technology can change lives,
small towns can shape the future,
and ambition can start anywhere.

As Meesho heads into its next chapter, the founders remain rooted in the philosophy that shaped the company.

India’s digital story is just beginning,” Vidit says.
And we want Meesho to be the platform where every Indian—seller or buyer—feels included.
