National Business News Highlights
1. Indian markets recover after a volatile session
The Sensex gained 138 points to 74,902.59, while the Nifty rose 46 points to 23,477.80, recovering after Wednesday’s sharp sell-off. Buying during the closing auction helped the indices finish higher.
2. Rupee falls to ₹95.44 against US dollar
The rupee weakened for the third straight session as crude oil prices surged and dollar demand increased. RBI intervention through dollar sales and FX swaps helped limit the fall.
3. Crude crosses $100, putting pressure on Indian businesses
Brent crude remained above $100 a barrel, raising concerns over India’s import bill, inflation and the profitability of oil marketing companies. Business Standard estimates OMCs could be losing around ₹5 per litre on petrol and ₹23 on diesel at current crude prices.
4. RBI uses FX swaps to manage rupee liquidity
The RBI conducted dollar-rupee sell/buy swaps for a second consecutive day, using the mechanism to absorb excess rupee liquidity while indirectly supporting the currency amid higher oil prices.
5. Wipro says AI productivity equivalent to 20,000 workers
Wipro’s AI initiatives have created productivity capacity equivalent to about 20,000 employees, who have been redeployed to other roles. More than 100,000 employees have received advanced AI training.
6. Adani Airports raises ₹9,825 crore from global investors
Temasek, BlackRock, Alpha Wave Global and Premji Invest are investing around $1.03 billion in Adani Airport Holdings for a combined 5.54% stake. The funds will support airport expansion, with Adani targeting capacity of 200 million passengers annually.
7. Ultraviolette plans ₹779-crore EV manufacturing plant
Indian electric motorcycle startup Ultraviolette Automotive plans to invest about $82 million (₹779 crore) in a new Hosur plant. Initial capacity will be 250,000 vehicles annually, expandable to 500,000.
8. Classic Legends to more than double motorcycle capacity
The Jawa and Yezdi maker plans to increase manufacturing capacity from about 120,000 to more than 200,000 motorcycles by the end of the year as it targets stronger domestic sales and exports.
9. India–US/EU trade tensions remain a business concern
The US and European Union have raised concerns over India’s tariffs, quality-control orders and digital trade restrictions. Meanwhile, India says exports under its free-trade agreements are growing faster than imports.
10. Tokenised bonds gain another foothold in India
L&T and IIFL Finance have raised ₹500 crore and ₹25 crore, respectively, through tokenised bonds, following REC’s debut issue. The deals mark early experimentation with blockchain-based settlement in India’s debt market.
