HOW IT WORKS: FASTag

Bilkul Bazaar | Sunday Special

How Does Toll Payment Happen Automatically?

Ever wondered how your vehicle crosses a toll plaza without stopping to pay cash?

The answer is FASTag—a small electronic tag fixed to your vehicle’s windscreen that allows toll charges to be collected automatically.

1. The FASTag is linked to your vehicle

FASTag uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. The tag is linked to your vehicle’s registration details and a prepaid account or bank account.

Once installed on the windscreen, it stays with the vehicle.

2. Your vehicle approaches the toll plaza

As your car enters a FASTag lane, RFID equipment installed at the toll plaza detects the tag on your windscreen.

The system identifies the vehicle and verifies the FASTag.

3. The toll amount is calculated

The toll plaza system determines the applicable toll based on the vehicle category and that particular toll plaza.

There is no need for the driver to hand over cash or swipe a card.

4. The amount is deducted electronically

Once the transaction is authorised, the applicable toll amount is automatically deducted from the FASTag-linked account.

The entire process takes only a few seconds.

5. The barrier opens

After successful verification and payment, the toll barrier opens and the vehicle can continue its journey.

If the balance is insufficient or the FASTag is not valid, the transaction may fail and the vehicle may have to follow the toll plaza’s applicable procedure.

6. You receive a transaction alert

After the toll is deducted, the transaction details are generally communicated through the channels provided by the FASTag issuer, such as SMS or app notifications.

This makes it easier to keep track of toll payments.

What makes FASTag possible?

The system brings together several technologies:

FASTag → RFID → Toll Plaza Reader → Vehicle Identification → Toll Calculation → Electronic Payment

The key technology is RFID, which allows information stored on the tag to be read wirelessly when the vehicle passes through the toll lane.

Why was FASTag introduced?

FASTag was designed to make toll collection faster and more efficient. Electronic tolling can reduce the need for cash handling, minimise waiting at toll plazas and create a digital record of toll transactions.

For motorists, the biggest advantage is simple: less stopping, less cash handling and a quicker toll experience.

Bilkul Simply

Think of FASTag like an electronic identity card for your vehicle at a toll plaza.

The reader recognises your vehicle, the system checks the toll, the money is deducted electronically—and the barrier opens.

That is how a small tag on your windscreen helps keep traffic moving.
